Lab 1 - Practical Orchestration
Live Course • 4 Weeks
Beginner to Intermediate Level
This four-week live course offers a focused, real-world approach to orchestration for composers who want to understand how to assign musical ideas to different instruments, and, more importantly, why certain choices work better than others.
Each session explores a major section of the orchestra through the lens of the core orchestration concept T.O.M.: Tone/Tessitura, Overtones, and Mass. This framework helps demystify the orchestration process and trains you to think practically, rather than guessing what should go where.
Week 1: Introduction to T.O.M., with practical tools for orchestral thinking and sonic decision-making
Week 2: Orchestrating for Strings – leveraging their expressive range, timbre, and power
Week 3: Orchestrating for Brass – from bold declarations to subtle harmonic weight
Week 4: Orchestrating for Woodwinds – exploring color, adaptability, and clarity
Using real-world examples from public domain scores (via IMSLP), you’ll gain practical insight into how master composers think about instrumental color, register, and impact.
🛠️ This is a lab-style class, so expect to listen, analyze, and apply the techniques we discuss each week. Each session runs 1 to 1.5 hours and includes a dedicated Q&A section, giving you space to dive deeper into your specific questions and orchestration challenges.
✅ All sessions are recorded. When you purchase your ticket, you’ll receive a link to join the first session live. Can’t attend? No problem — recordings will be delivered to your inbox shortly after each class.
All sessions are held each Sunday between May 25 - June 15, live at 11:00 AM Central Time (CST).
That’s:
• 9:00 AM Pacific (PT)
• 12:00 PM Eastern (ET)
• 5:00 PM London (BST)
